“If they murder you,
it’s personal.
You fist back with
emotions, reasoning and strategy.
If they murder a group of you,
it’s impersonal. They thirst for
resources. You carry secrets from the deepest
cabinet,
metaphor in blood and
moonlighting.”
“Originally, the zoo was built to remind us
of our separation from nature.
There was no animal in the cage, just earth.
This reminds me
of Tony’s mom’s suburban lawn
in Madison, Wisconsin
overflowing with
native prairie grass
and signs from the city that read
’I am not insane.’”
“I had faith in people
the way Earth has Moon
the way a cat’s named Kitty
the way god trusts me to know sin
and self-punish
perhaps the limits of my erotic imagination are boring and predictable
but I will die grateful
for the adolescence I got to have offline
that pines sometimes obscured the view
was entirely the point”

“9:25 AM and the sky is a Grape Long Drink
on ice and all the pollinators are dead
hand in hand with me. I’m allergic
to everything that happens. What will I
put on now, what pulses in the temples,
the wrists? I clench myself beside my fist
but nothing is as hard as
the world, not really.”
